"Special Places to Stay in Spain"

"The two old stone buildings of the Tejera de Fausto stand gloriously alone more than a mile from the nearest village by the banks of the Cega river. It is no coincidence that the roofs are terracotta: tiles ("tejas") used to be manufactured right here. Close by are the Guadarrama mountains, sentinels guarding Madrid and the Meseta; the setting is as Castilian as you could hope to find. The decoration is in perfect keeping; the rooms have simple and attractive rustic furniture, central heating in winter, good bathrooms, neither telephone nor television to distract you from the views. There are books and local information in the lounge. The restaurant-- a series of small adjoining rooms with blazing fires in the colder months-- is pure Castile again; specialities are roast lamb, suckling pig and excellent game dishes (often wild boar). Owner Jaime loves communicating his knowledge of the area. Next door is a Romanesque chapel built with foundation stones from a Roman villa and you can walk out from the Tejera on the old transhumance routes that criss-cross the region."
